Yesterday in my position as Leas Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal Council I was very honoured to attend the first phase of the ‘Our Local Heroes’ project launch at a special event in the Louth County Museum.
The project recognises the international achievements of 12 Dundalk people in their hometown with outdoor banners.
The banners will be hung in the coming days on lampposts along Park Street.
The event which was attended by some of the Heroes family members and the Project was led by Dundalk Tidy Towns, and produced in association with The County Museum.
I am pleased to say that the first 12 local heroes to be unveiled are.
· Dorothy McArdle [Novelist & Playwright]
· Peter Rice [Engineer]
· Thomas Coulter Botanist & Explorer]
· Brendan O’Dowda [Irish Tenor]
· Henry McShane [Industrialist]
· Sir John MacNeill [Engineer]
· Tom Sharkey [Champion Boxer]
· Peadar O Dubhda [Writer]
· Paul Vincent Carroll [Novelist]
· Peter McArdle [Olypmian]
· Tomas McAnna [Theatre Director & Playwright]
· Sir Francis Leopold McClintock [Explorer]
Both County Museum, Dundalk, Ireland Curator, Brian Walsh and Newly-elected chair of Dundalk Tidy Towns, Helen Byrne spoke at the event and both said that they were very excited about he project and that they had some trouble at keeping the heroes to 12 People!!
Given that there is only one women included in the 12 I was pleased that Brian did speak about the fact that they did hit a wall on finding more women to feature.
“Of course we know there were more women out there who should be recognised as local heroes but maybe due to the times there were years ago, they couldn’t or didn’t want to be noticed.
“We would love to hear from anybody who can help us highlight our female heroes.”
I am so looking forward to seeing the heroes banners up in Park Street in the next day or two and would hope that given the potential of this Project that we may even one day have Banners County Wide Celebrating the Heroes of Louth!!! Big Congratulations to all involved in the Project it is such a tremendous achievement!
